The liver and health
The liver plays a vital role in energy production, hormonal balance, gut health, skin health, immunity and even mood.
Supporting the liver is done indirectly via:
- cleaning up the diet: minimising triggering foods which include processed foods, alcohol and sugars and increasing foods that are rich in phytochemicals and antioxidants
- working on your gut: there is something called “leaky gut”, where your gut lining can have little holes in it that allows toxins and bacteria to “leak” into the blood; your body is smart and knows this can happen sometimes, so will send the blood directly to the liver to be filtered. However, if your liver is constantly “filtering”, this filter will get dirty and will stop functioning well. Things that cause leaky gut include dysbiosis/bacterial imbalances, parasites, medications like nurofen, antibiotics, the pill, proton pump inhibitors, stress and a poor diet
There are also herbs and nutrients that can prescribed that:
- stimulate your liver to detoxify quicker OR slower: issues with detoxifying can cause sensitivity to chemicals and smells, sensitivity to alcohol, sensitivity to medications, headaches and migraines, fatigue that doesn’t get better with rest, allergies, poor immunity and skin issues
- stimulate your liver to create more bile: bile insufficiency can cause constipation, bloating, fat soluble vitamin insufficiency and hormonal, skin and mental health changes
- aid in the regeneration of liver cells to enhance healing: chronic inflammation of the liver can lead to the development of fatty liver and scar tissue and permanent dysfunction
Some lifestyle changes can also support your liver, my favourite include:
- minimising toxins in the home
- hydrating!!
- engaging in fasting protocols
- engaging in regular saunas
